Inspection and risk assessment of chemical substances in children's products bought online

Mapping of chemical substances in consumer products, no. 206, October 2026

The compliance analyses performed in this project show that there are a number of products (13 out of 80, corresponding to 16%) that do not comply with legislation regarding the content of the regulated substances studied in this project (phthalates, PAHs, SCCPs, certain PFAS, lead and cadmium and nickel release). The compliance analyses also show that there is a higher proportion of non-compliant products among items purchased on large online market-places (28%), whereas 6% of products purchased on dropshipping websites and 9% of prod-ucts purchased on Danish websites with own inventory do not comply with legislation regard-ing the chemical substances studied in this project.

No health risk was identified from the use of the children's fashion products containing the two non-regulated substances that were subject to a risk assessment in this project. However, the migration testing show that the products with the highest migration of these substances came from products purchased either from large online marketplaces or from dropshipping websites.

The project shows that there is a clear tendency that when products are received directly from countries outside the EU (via the large marketplaces), there are more violations concerning the content of regulated chemical substances than if the products are purchased directly from Danish online stores. In this respect, the results of this study are in line with previous studies that have been conducted on online commerce.
