Survey and health assessment of mercury in compact fluorescent lamps and straight fluorescent lamps

Survey of Chemical Substances in Consumer Products No. 104, 2010

Compact fluorescent lamps represent one of the most efficient solutions available today to improve energy efficiency of house lighting – but compact and straight fluorescent lamps contain small amounts of the element mercury, which is hazardous to health. With this project, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency has examined which types of compact and straight fluorescent lamps exist on the Danish market for private use and the quantities of mercury and mercury compounds ne these fluorescent lamps. Based on this an assessment of the health risk associated with breakage of compact or a straight fluorescent lamp in a private home is performed.
