Degradation of Estrogens in Sewage Treatment Processes

Female hormones - oestrogens - can cause sexual disorder in fish and other aquatic organisms. Discharges of sewage are likely to be the main source of the impact of oestrogens on the aquatic environment. In this project a number of laboratory tests were made to investigate binding and microbiological degradation of oestrogens in active sludge, showing that most of the oestrogens are removed in the active sludge systems.
