Sustainable Island Initiative (completed)

Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous country, with a total population of 268 million people spread over about 6000 inhabited islands. Denmark is also an island nation with almost 100 inhabited islands. Islands and isolated systems are often challenged by geography and logistics, and need solutions tailored to specific “off grid” conditions within waste resource management and energy production. The Project was completed in March 2023.

The Sustainable Island Initiative (SII) is a joint add-on initiative and part of choices the existing Strategic Sector Cooperation (SSC) within Energy and Environment in Indonesia. The proposal has been developed by the Danish Environment Protection Agency (DEPA) and the Danish Energy Agency (DEA) in collaboration with provincial authorities from West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and the Batam/Riau Islands as well as central environment and energy authorities in Jakarta.

The SII aims to support islands towards a green and low carbon pathway through more effective solid waste management and sustainable bioenergy solutions. The cooperation promotes the development and implementation of replicable and sustainable waste and energy solutions in an island context.

The SII addresses strategic challenges as well as constraints in the framework conditions and develops replicable solutions related to solid waste, circular economy and Waste to Energy (WtE).The SII focusses on aligning the interdependencies between solid waste management and renewable energy production through a more integrated and holistic planning approach.

The SII was financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, DEPA and DEA and completed in March 2023.

The SII partnership between Denmark and Indonesia focuses on the following thematic areas:

  • Green transition and Sustainable Island Development
  • Sustainable and renewable Waste-to-Energy
  • General and Organic Waste Management

Some of the activities that are being planned or are under implementation as part of the SII, includes the following:

  • Sector dialogue and capacity building on integrated approaches to waste resource management and WtE solutions
  • Preparation of WtE Technology Catalogue
  • Pre-feasibility study of the waste and WtE sector at Lombok
  • Webinars on sustainable island development, waste resource management and waste-to-energy
