Shipbreaking in OECD

Globally, most shipbreaking takes place in on beaches in less developed countries under poor conditions regarding health, safety and environment. The possibilities for demolition of ships native to EU/OECD member states have been assessed. Countries with relatively low labour costs and registered ship breakers include Spain, Italy, Turkey and Mexico. Shipbreaking under environmentally acceptable conditions takes place in only a few yards in Italy and Spain. Inspection at the Italian yard suggests it is a suitable choice for environmentally acceptable shipbreaking. At the inspected Spanish yard Å improvement is necessary to comply with applicable standards
