Occurrence and fate of antibiotic resistant bacteria in sewage

In this project different aspects concerning the occurrence and fate of antibiotic resistant bacteria in the sewage were investigated. The results of the project indicate that the occurrence of antibiotic resistant bacteria can be increased by the discharge of waste effluent from pharmaceutical plants. The study was conducted on a single pharmaceutical plant. Furthermore investigation indicates that sewage treatment causes a reduction in the number of resistant bacteria and finally, resistant strains isolated from treated sewage were investigated for their ability to survive in natural waters and retain antibiotic resistant.
